Cooking Classes at the Iraa Community Kitchen
Cooking Class Tutors
The cooking classes at Iraa Community Kitchen are grounded in an approach of sharing knowledge through food. Rather than following a fixed teaching model, we invite a diverse range of kitchen tutors to share knowledge, skills and experiences around a particular meal, recipe, ingredient or way of cooking. Our tutors may include professional chefs, accomplished home cooks, Chefs in Residence, experimental cooks, farmers, food practitioners and others whose relationship with food has led them to develop particular knowledge or practices.
We look for tutors who bring not only culinary knowledge, but also a willingness to share, experiment and learn with others.
Our criteria for engaging tutors
1. Knowledge and practice
Tutors should have an intermediate to professional level of knowledge, experience or research around a particular food, ingredient, recipe or culinary practice, and be able to communicate this knowledge through appropriate culinary language.
2. A desire to share
We look for people who are genuinely interested in sharing what they know with a community seeking to awaken curiosity, confidence and a deeper relationship with cooking and food.
3. Engagement with local food systems
Tutors should be open to working with local ingredients, markets and farmers, and to thinking creatively about how recipes can be adapted to what is locally available. We value cooking as a way of understanding where food comes from and the systems that surround it.
4. Ability to communicate knowledge
Tutors should be able to translate their knowledge and experience into an accessible, engaging learning experience, creating space for participants to ask questions, experiment and contribute their own knowledge.
5. Openness to an art-led community
We are interested in tutors who are curious about the relationship between food and artistic practice and who are willing to engage with Iraa's art-led community. Through these encounters, we hope to nurture relationships between culinary practice, visual art, experimentation and creative thinking. Ultimately, the cooking class is not only about learning how to prepare a particular dish. It is a space for exchange — where recipes carry stories, ingredients open conversations, and cooking becomes a way of building relationships between people, place, art and food.
