Chef in Residence Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS)
About the Program
What is the Chef in Residence program?
A residency for creative practitioners who work with food — whether as chefs, artists, researchers, or something in between. It offers time, space, and support to develop your practice in an environment shaped by art and community.
Who can apply?
Anyone 18 or older with a creative practice centred on food. No formal culinary or art training required — what matters is genuine intent and curiosity.
What does 'food as material' mean?
It means treating food as more than something to eat — as a subject, a medium, a lens. That might be edible sculpture, food politics research, communal ritual, or a recipe as conceptual act. The interpretation is yours.
Dates & Duration
How long is the residency?
One to three months, agreed upon during the application process.
When does it run?
Two periods each year: April – July, and September – December.
How many days a week am I expected to work?
At least three days a week at the kitchen, unless otherwise arranged with the Iraa team.
Eligibility
Do I need to be based in Uganda?
No. The program welcomes both local and international applicants.
Do I need professional training?
