Chef in Residence Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS)

About the Program

What is the Chef in Residence program?

A residency for creative practitioners who work with food — whether as chefs, artists, researchers, or something in between. It offers time, space, and support to develop your practice in an environment shaped by art and community.

Who can apply?

Anyone 18 or older with a creative practice centred on food. No formal culinary or art training required — what matters is genuine intent and curiosity.

What does 'food as material' mean?

It means treating food as more than something to eat — as a subject, a medium, a lens. That might be edible sculpture, food politics research, communal ritual, or a recipe as conceptual act. The interpretation is yours.

Dates & Duration

How long is the residency?

One to three months, agreed upon during the application process.

When does it run?

Two periods each year: April – July, and September – December.

How many days a week am I expected to work?

At least three days a week at the kitchen, unless otherwise arranged with the Iraa team.

Eligibility

Do I need to be based in Uganda?

No. The program welcomes both local and international applicants.

Do I need professional training?

No. A clear intention for how you'll use the residency matters more than credentials.

Support & Finances

What does the residency provide?

  • Artist fee: 450 euros (3-month residency)

  • Material budget: 300 euros

  • Travel support: up to 500,000 UGX locally, or up to 600 euros internationally

  • Additional support for community events (pop-up dinners, farm-to-table, etc.)

What costs am I responsible for?

Personal living expenses, costs beyond the material budget, excess travel costs, and visa fees. Iraa can provide a support letter for visa applications.

The Kitchen & Facilities

What's in the kitchen?

Electric oven, gas stove tops, smokers, grill, peanut butter grinder, blender, food processor, cake mixer, and refrigerator.

Where will I stay?

A furnished private room with bathroom in a shared, gated compound. WiFi included.

What else do I have access to?

  • Gardens and a flexible lounge space for events

  • Connections to local farmers and farms

  • Art spaces and practitioners across Uganda

Expectations & Outcomes

What's expected of me?

  • Develop and follow through on your concept

  • Work at the kitchen at least 3 days a week

  • Involve the community in your activities

  • Host an Open Kitchen session at the end of your residency

  •

What is the Open Kitchen?

A public-facing event at the close of your residency — a meal, workshop, talk, or whatever format fits your work. It's how you share your process with the community.

Do I need a finished project idea before applying?

No. A direction or intention is enough. The residency is a space to develop and discover.
